A Gift from Eastern Tibet

Like the Moon that No one Can Steal
Leaving one's career doesn't mean one deserts Samsara. Only that priority in one's life has shifted. When we practice the dharma, we don't have to turn our back to the world by seeking an ordination, refusing to get married, abandoning meat, eating only one meal per day, not associating with anyone or refusing to watch movies or listening to music. Real dharma practice is the training of one's mind with a sole purpose of attaining enlightenment. Outer behaviors enhance us to be constantly cheerful and mindful. Inner practice is more important.
When we set our goal to enligtenment, outer behaviors - both body and speech - will follow. We'll never get lost. We'll never do anything wrong. Because of this motivation, we want to seek a master who can guide us on the path of enlightenment. Representing Buddha on earth, the teacher is a lamp illuminating a way to Buddha nature, an inner condition which is clear but empty just like the vast expanse.
Hence, dharma practice occurs in all situations. It always remains in our heart in the same manner as the moon in the sky which no one can steal. Dharma practice doesn't happen only in the prayer room, when we meditate with our hands folded on our lap, or when we listen to the dharma teaching. Dharma practice happens everywhere no matter whether we are eating, working, driving, falling ill, sleeping or even when we are watching a movie or other kinds of entertainment.
With mind inseparable from the teacher's mind, with proper attitude to help sentient beings attain Buddhahood, whatever we do, whatever we speak, whatever we think constitute dharma practice.

What Matters is Our Mind
Yesterday I attended a lecture by a Japanese linguistic professor Sachiko Ide. She was talking about a book by Linda Young on cross talks in Chinese and American. Linda Young is described an American with Chinese mind. I was struck by this description. In fact, what matters is not what culture you were born into and what you consider yourself to be. But it is the quality of your mind - how close it is to Buddha's mind. We tend to think that our group is better than others. Sometimes we cultivate hatred which leads to all sorts of conflicts and problems, just because we think we are better than others. But deep down all human beings are the same. The mind is the only true essence. It can't be labeled Thai, Tibetan, Chinese or others.
Samsara and Nirvanara are One and the Same

Remembering Tara (2)
This morning we made an offering to Tara, recited Tara mantra as well as Guru Rinpoche and Vajrasattva mantras. A new friend came to pray with us. She learned how to make prastrations before. And we talked about how to set our mind while doing the prostrations. We must feel grateful to all sentient beings. With them we prostrate to our teachers and Buddhas with unshakable faith, total respect and heartfelt devotion.
When we recite the mantra, we think of compassion and generate it to sentient beings. Our body, speech and mind fuse into one while reciting it. We visualize Lama Tara sitting on the lotus throne above the crown of our head. There are the sun and the moon on the lotus, a symbol of purity. The sun and the moon represent means and compassion, two important aspects of enlightenment.
After the prayer, Yontan and I recited the praise to Mother Chama in the Bon lineage. Chama is one and the same as Mother Tara. Then we meditated on our root guru with gratitude. We asked for his blessing in realizing the primordial nature of mind and in attaining enlightenment for the sake of others.

Remembering Tara

This Thursday is Dakini Day. I'll make an offering to the 21 Taras and recite several prayers at the small Tara temple in my house. Anyone is welcome to join me in the prayer. My house location: 129/908 Perfect Place, Ratanatibet Road. Praying time: 9-11.00 am. Vegetarian lunch will be provided.
This picture is a statue of Green Tara taken from a temple in Tibet. Green Tara symbolizes compassion and protection from fear. When we encounter any fear in life, we can think of her, call her name and recite Tara mantra. This will dispel the suffering from fear.
