Life Is Short and Death Can Be Sudden

Many people, paticularly young ones often take it for granted thinking that we will live long and death will not occur to us fast. But in fact, life is very short and death can be sudden. It's imperative to prepare for it now. The quake is a great lesson for all of us.

A young student once asked me why I thought death was suffering. She said when we die, we just lose consciousness and there's nothing after that.

The moment of death is one of the most traumatic and frightening experiences beings ever experience. No matter whether the dying moment is sudden or chronic, suffering and pain are there. When consciousness leaves the body, it still has feelings and emotions. It still experiences pain, loneliness and feels angry, hungry, thirsty, etc. Imagine your naked self without a cover body. Imagine wandering mind travelling here and there without a purpose and having no home to stay, having no one to take care of, to cling on to.

During bardo period of about 49 days, Tibetans will think of the deceased with great compassion. Whatever they say or do is towards making merit for them so that they will be liberated in bardo, or gain a rebirth in Sukhavati.

ชีวิตนี้สั้นนักและความตายก็สามารถเกิดขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็ว อย่าคิดว่าเราอายุยังน้อย ยังอยู่ได้อีกนาน เราไม่รู้หรอกว่าเมื่อไหร่ความตายจะมาถึง ขอให้เราทำทุกวินาทีให้ดีที่สุดและอย่าประมาทในการเตรียมตัวตาย ขอให้เราถือเรื่องแผ่นดินไหวเป็นบทเรียนทางธรรมอันยิ่งใหญ่

นิสิตคนหนึ่งเคยถามดิฉันว่าทำไมอาจารย์ถึงบอกว่าความตายเป็นทุกข์ เธอบอกว่าเมื่อเราตายไป เราก็หมดความรู้สึกนึกคิด ไม่มีอะไรเหลือให้เจ็บปวด

ขณะกำลังตายเป็นประสบการณ์ที่น่ากลัวที่สุดประสบการณ์หนึ่งของชีวิตสัตว์ทั้งหลาย ไม่ว่าชั่วขณะนั้นจะเกิดขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็วหรือกินเวลานาน ทุกชีวิตประสบความทุกข์และความเจ็บปวด เมื่อวิญญาณออกจากร่าง วิญญาณยังคงรับรู้ รู้เจ็บ รู้หิว โกรธ โศกเศร้า ลองนึกถึงตัวเราที่ไม่มีร่างห่อหุ้ม นึกถึงจิตที่เร่ร่อนไปขาดจุดหมาย ไม่มีบ้านให้อยู่ ไม่มีใครดูแล ไม่มีใครให้ยึดเป็นที่พึ่ง

ช่วงบาร์โด 49 วัน ชาวทิเบตจะนึกถึงผู้ตายด้วยความกรุณาอย่างมาก ไม่ว่าพวกเขาจะพูดหรือทำอะไร ก็จะเป็นไปเพื่อการทำบุญกุศล เพื่อให้ผู้ตายได้เข้าถึงการหลุดพ้นในบาร์โดหรือได้เกิดในดินแดนสุขาวดี
