Do We Know How to Meditate?

In a song to one of Tibet's greatest masters Longchen Ramjampa, a practitioner asks for the master's blessing. He laments: although he's still in retreat, his mind goes back to family and friends; although he fears uncertainties of life and bardo he'll face after death, he's still attached to worldly distractions and can't let go of the ones he loves.

When we meditate - no matter whether we close or open our eyes, whether we focus on our breath or on the deity above the crown of our head, whether we are in a meditation room, in retreat or elsewhere, have we ever asked ourself these questions? Do we really know what we are doing? Where is our mind? Does it go back to family and friends? Is it sad, happy or indifferent? What is the meaning of the visualized deity, sacred syllable or the breath we meditate on? Do we understand the real nature of ourself?
